About the course
Econ 201 is a one-semester introduction to economics at the United States Air Force Academy. The course presents economics as a framework for analyzing alternatives, making better decisions, and advocating recommendations to others, with a focus on national security applications.
The first part of the course covers microeconomics: supply and demand, economic surplus, market controls, elasticity, taxes, trade, marginal analysis, externalities and public goods, production and cost, market structures (perfect competition, monopoly, oligopoly, and monopolistic competition), and labor markets. The second part turns to macroeconomics: GDP and inflation, unemployment, the financial system, economic sanctions, aggregate supply and demand, and fiscal and monetary policy. Throughout the semester, cadets also work in groups on a project applying economic models to a real-world problem of their choice and complete a series of personal financial planning assignments.
